Abstract

Objectives: This study examines the role of the new electoral system—represented by the proportional representation system at both local and national constituency levels—in the representation of political parties in the Twentieth House of Representatives, elected in 2024.

Methods: The study employed two methodologies. The first is the historical approach, which helped gather information on the development of the electoral law and system in Jordan, particularly from 1989 to 2024. The second is the descriptive-analytical method, used to describe the new electoral system and analyze its role in enhancing political party representation in the Twentieth House of Representatives.

Results: The findings indicate that the rise in political party representation in the Twentieth House of Representatives is closely associated with the adoption of the proportional representation system at both the local and national levels.

Conclusions: While the new electoral system positively influenced political party representation, fostering a political culture that supports partisan engagement and alleviates fears associated with party affiliation is essential. Additionally, further amendments to the electoral system are recommended to ensure the effectiveness of political parties within the legislative process.
