Abstract

Objectives: This study highlights the significance of the reports which were written by agricultural and industrial specialists and technicians between 1919 and 1920. Upon the request of Al-Sharif Hussein Bin Ali,  several specialists were invited to conduct a comprehensive survey of agricultural lands in Tihama and Taif, within Al-Hijaz, from Bilad Al-Sham (specifically Jeddah, Taif, Tihama, and Mecca). The resulting scientific reports were unique during this period.

Methods: The study adopts a descriptive and analytical approach, utilizing historical research methods that primarily rely on primary sources for information. The investigation chiefly uses the reports prepared by the agricultural and industrial specialists and published in the Al-Qiblah newspaper. It also employs other references and sources that delve into the history of Al-Hijaz in the Hashemite era.

Results: The study concludes that Al-Sharif Hussein Bin Ali's vision extended beyond political and military affairs, reflecting an interest in land development. This was pursued by inviting professional scholars who played pivotal roles in devising economic strategies aimed at developing several regions in Al-Hijaz, both agriculturally and industrially. This led to the establishment of the first agricultural school in Al-Hijaz and the mint in Mecca.

Conclusion: The study shows that the scientific reports of the agricultural and industrial specialists suggest the potential for agricultural and industrial development in various regions of Al-Hijaz, particularly in Tihama and Taif, based on modern scientific principles. These reports facilitated several experimental agricultural initiatives, establishing the feasibility of cultivating numerous crops and trees in Al-Hijaz.
