Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to determine the level of value orientation among a sample of Jordanian youth, identify the most common symptoms of mental illness among them, and examine the extent to which value orientation contributes to reducing symptoms of mental illness.

Method: Two scales were developed: the Value Orientation Scale and the Symptoms of Mental Illness Scale, and their psychometric properties were verified in terms of reliability and validity. The level of value orientation and symptoms of mental illness were divided into three levels: low (1.33), moderate (2.34-3.67), and high (3.68-5). A convenience sample of Jordanian youth in the Karak Governorate was selected, with a total of 394 male and female participants.

Results: The study found that Jordanian youth have a moderate level of value orientation, with a mean score of 3.33 and a standard deviation of 0.33. The mean score for symptoms of mental illness was 2.97 with a standard deviation of 0.23. The results also indicated that value orientation predicts a reduction in symptoms of mental illness by 5%, and there were no statistically significant differences between males and females in terms of value orientation and symptoms of mental illness.

Recommendations: It is necessary to utilize the value orientation of students to assist Jordanian youth in reducing symptoms of mental illness. Both value orientation and symptoms of mental illness do not differ among youth based on gender. Efforts should be made to focus on certain moderate value orientation patterns, which ranked lower, and work on their development, particularly in theoretical, aesthetic, and social values.
