Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the benefits and drawbacks of both film and digital cinematography. It also seeks to identify the types of cinematography most commonly used in films nominated for an Academy Award, as well as the types of cameras used in their production.
Methods: The study employs a descriptive approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative analysis to accomplish its objectives and answer the study questions. The differences between film and digital cinematography are examined through a purposeful sample of 25 international films nominated for the Academy Award in Cinematography each year over the past five years (2018 to 2022).
Results: A quantitative analysis of films participating in the Oscars revealed that 80% of all digital cinematographic cameras used were of the Arri Alexa type. The general trend in global cinema is towards the use of digital cinematography, with the statistical study revealing that 80% of films were shot digitally, while 20% used film cinematography. The study also illustrates how digital cinematography has helped reduce the financial budgets required in the filmmaking process.
Conclusion: Digital cinematography positively impacts the film production process by simplifying procedures, cutting budgets, and increasing the rate of cinematic production.
