Abstract

Objectives: The study aims at revealing voter’s selection patterns of candidates for the municipality and decentralization elections in Jordan in the light of the orientation methods that are imposed on them. The study uses the theory of pattern variables as an approach.

Methods: The study adopts the analytical descriptive method. Purposive sampling was used in selecting 544 voters from Irbid. The data was collected from the study areas by conducting interviews during the election campaign period from January to late February of 2022.

Results: The results of the study show that the benefit orientation method was imposed on voters (to a great extent), which represents choosing a candidate who takes care of his region’s concerns and provides his voters with prestigious positions in his election campaign. The study also shows that family orientation methods forced voters (to a great extent) to choose a distinctive candidate. Moreover, collective orientation methods directed voters (to a large degree) to choose a candidate whose motive for participation is serving his clan and providing a decent level of service for his region. Unofficial voter guidance, to a limited extent, favored candidates with familial dedication and extensive connections. Common values moderately influenced voters to choose an ethical candidate promising employment and future benefits.

Conclusions: The study advocates the need for increasing voters’ political awareness so as to choose the local administration candidate based on general criteria, impartiality, group benefit, and the candidate’s achievements and awareness.
