Objectives: This study explores the correlation between Philosophy and Literature, specifically delving into the philosophy of discontent and pessimism as depicted in various literary works. The chosen focus is the collection of stories titled "The Illegitimate Girl" by Jordanian writer Jum’a Shanab, which vividly showcases themes of pessimism, anxiety, discontent, and anger using notation and irony.
Methods: Two approaches are applied in this study. The first is the social approach, which refers to the study of events that reveal manifestations of discontent in stories. The second approach is the artistic method, which refers to the study of characterization in a literary work, in addition to other technical aspects.
Results: Manifestations of discontent and dissatisfaction are conveyed to the readers through the powerful emotions of characters, their hasty and snappy attitudes, their sharp reactions and their deep desires to be emancipated from all forms of suffering, including boredom, poverty, boring daily routine, and monotony of life. To make this possible, the writer employs linguistic economy at the level of story titles, sentences used in elaborating on events, length of stories and a deliberate choice of words that are pregnant with negative connotations, especially when developing detailed description or making comments all through narration.
Conclusions: The study recommends that students focus primary focus on the relation between Literature and Philosophy, reveal the intertwined manifestations between them, and accentuate the influence of content on the artistic form of a literary work.
