تناولت الدراسة مراحل استخدام الفناء الداخلي للمسجد عبر التاريخ، وواكبت تطوراته خلال الدولة الإسلامية باختلاف أقاليمها، وقد استعان الباحث بالهندسة الفاضلة والنسب الهندسية وتطبيقها على الفناء الداخلي، وتوصلت الدراسة إلى نتائج حول الفناء الداخلي للمساجد تمثلت في خصوصية الفناء وأهميته للمسجد؛ حيث كان الفناء جزءًا رئيسًا بالمسجد في كل العصور مهما اختلف شكله وتطور وزيد عليه عناصر مجملة مما جعل للفناء الداخلي للمسجد وظائف متعددة خلال العصور الإسلامية، مما أوضح البعد الوظيفي والجمالي للفناء في العمارة الإسلامية، كما كان للهندسة الفاضلة دور كبير في تخطيط أفنية المساجد من حيث النسب الهندسية للفناء مع ما يحيط به من كتل معمارية..
