Objectives: This study aims to identify the historical evolution and internal structure of the city of Hebron based on the variables of education and profession. It also aims to clarify the harsh conditions the city has experienced since the Israeli occupation in 1967.
Methods: Researchers adopt the historical method to trace the city’s historical stages, and the quantitative approach to analyze its internal structure. The study includes the variables of education and profession obtained from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics for the year 2017. The data covers 83 statistical areas of the city.
Results: The analysis reveals the presence of two factors: The first, 'Higher Education and Upper Professions,' accounts for 75% of the city's internal structure, mainly in the neighborhoods of northern and western areas. The second factor, 'Simple Education and Simple Professions,' explains 15% of the city's internal structure, predominantly in the southern areas of the city, and especially in the vicinity of the Ibrahimi Mosque. It also covers newly expanded areas classified as Area C according to the Oslo Accords between the PLO and Israel. The latter are situated in proximity to Israeli settlements. The study has shown that the Israeli occupation of Hebron and its settlements have distorted the growth of the city’s center and prevented its expansion outwards.
Conclusions: Researchers recommend increased attentiveness to Hebron city to secure the presence of its residents in their homeland and resist Zionist settlements.
