Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to clarify the nature and dimensions of China's stance on the 2022 Russian-Ukrainian war and to outline the war's impacts on the escalation of future U.S.-China competition.

Methods: To answer the study's questions and test its hypothesis, the study relied on the inductive method and the systemic analysis method.

Results: The Ukrainian war revealed a convergence of views between Russia and China regarding the need to restructure the international system. China's position on the war aligned with its national interests, and the Russian-Ukrainian war will have extensive and multi-level implications on the structure of the global system and regional security. Neutralizing Russian power and defining the limits of its control amidst the Ukrainian war is one of the main American strategies to compete with China. Thus, within its competition with the United States, China seeks to leverage the war to accelerate the transition within the international system towards a non-polar system, which is a shared Sino-Russian objective.

Conclusions:. The study concluded that the Russian-Ukrainian war had significant impacts on U.S.-China competition, highlighting the increasing intensity of disputes between the two nations. China is working within its rivalry with the United States to expedite the transition within the international system towards a non-polar system, which is a shared goal between China and Russia.
