Abstract

Objectives: The research aims to illustrate Britain's official stance on the Iraqi-Kuwaiti crisis between 1961-1963, which erupted when the Iraqi Prime Minister "Abd Al-Karim Qasim" announced during a abrupt press conference his intention to incorporate Kuwait into Iraq and issued a republican decree appointing Kuwait's governor "Abd Al-Salem Alsabbah" as Qaim Maqam of Kuwait, under the authority of the Basra governorate,This demand came a few days after Kuwait declared independence from Britain on June 19, 1961.

Methods: The methodology relied on a descriptive analytical historical research approach, which involves tracing historical facts by collecting historical material and seeking it from its primary resources, which are: a variety of unpublished and published documents from the British Foreign Office (F.O) and the U.S. Department of State (F.R.U.S); in addition to files from the Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A).

Results:. It was found that Britain played a significant, essential, and critical role at both the military and political levels in preventing Iraq from carrying out its threats towards Kuwait, which leads to a easing the crisis.

Conclusions:The British government was concerned with the crisis that erupted between Iraq and Kuwait in the summer of June 1961. This British intervention protected Kuwait from Iraqi threats, and reducing the intensity of Iraqi statements regarding colonising Kuwait and annexing it forcefully.
