Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to identify the role of employing nostalgia as a source of enriching creative vision in contemporary Saudi artworks.

Method: The study used the qualitative and quantitative descriptive analytical approach. The study community included artists who use the concept of nostalgia and whose artworks were exhibited in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A purposive sample representative of the research community (interview) was used including 20 artists and faculty members. Some Saudi artworks in which nostalgia is employed were selected. The content analysis tool was used to analyze the selected artworks.

Results: The study results showed that the concept of nostalgia in contemporary Saudi art includes artworks that carry nostalgic meanings and memories. The results also showed that the most prominent artistic approaches to expressing nostalgia in contemporary Saudi art were manifested in plastic artworks, followed by assemblage art, sculpture, and photography. The growth of the Saudi artistic movement in various fields of visual arts was evident during the time period from 2000 to 2023, and it was found that employing nostalgia in artistic works helps stimulate the creative ideas of the artist and the recipient.

Conclusions: The study highlights the notion that employing nostalgia in artworks helps enrich the creative vision among artists and recipients. The study also shows that the employment of nostalgia helps stimulate creative and novel ideas among artists.
