Formal Metaphor in the Works of the Artist, Arshile Gorky (Analytical Study)

Abstract

Objectives: Current study is targeting to reveal the manifestations of formal metaphor in the works of the artist, Arshile Gorky, and the concept of metaphor in the visual arts and its types.

Methodology: The current study applied the descriptive approach and the analytical approach due to its suitability to study objectives, by describing and analyzing the works of the artist, Arshile Gorky, as it applies to the artists’ works on the period between (1925) to (1944), which were intentionally selected. There were (4) works according to specific criteria: year of production and artworks being metaphor.

Results: The study reached a set of results, including: Gorky was influenced by the style of the pioneers of the Cubism and Abstract schools, and borrowed it from them in some of his artworks, and that contextual metaphor is the most common type in Gorky’s works.

Recommendations: The study included recommendations, including: conducting several studies dealing with formal metaphor in the visual arts.
