Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to shed light on the issue of food security and its impact on human rights under international law and Lebanese legislation. It analyzes Lebanon's ability to achieve food security amidst the challenges it faces, in accordance with its international obligations and the Sustainable development goals.

Methods: Using a descriptive-analytical and legal approach, the study defines food security and its relationship to related concepts. It then examines the reality of food security in Lebanon based on international conventions and the Sustainable development goals. The legal approach presents the international conventions enshrining the right to food, and the relevant national legislation.

Results: The study finds that food security is a fundamental human need. While the right to food is enshrined in various international declarations and conventions, and Lebanon has enacted laws regulating it, this alone is insufficient. Lebanon suffers severe food insecurity due to its prolonged economic and financial crisis, negatively impacting human rights.

Conclusion: Food security, as a universally recognized human right, imposes obligations on states. Lebanon's failure to fulfill this obligation constitutes a violation of human rights. The study recommends enhancing international cooperation, adopting measures to provide food security, and developing an integrated food and nutrition security strategy to alleviate poverty and hunger. Victims of the right to adequate food violations should have access to effective remedies at both international and local levels.
