Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to explore the life, cultural context, and scholarly significance of Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, examining his teachers, the impact and importance of his works, and his approach to historical criticism. By analyzing al-Suyuti’s views and methodologies on historical texts, narrators, and authors, the study seeks to illuminate his contributions to historical criticism and his distinctive place among Muslim historians.

Methods: The study adopts a historical-analytical approach, gathering information from primary sources, comparing these sources, and analyzing the findings to draw conclusions on al-Suyuti's critical method.

Results: Findings reveal that al-Suyuti’s intellectual and cultural development was deeply influenced by the scholarly environment of his time, and that he invested significant efforts in accessing primary sources. His critical method is characterized by key elements, including the attribution of information to original sources, the exposure of falsehoods and plagiarism, the exclusion of superstitions from historical facts, verification of historical texts' accuracy, and an emphasis on impartiality and extensive knowledge. Al-Suyuti’s work also reflects a commitment to addressing new and unique topics within historical writing.

Conclusions: The study underscores the importance of examining both early and later historians to better understand their intentions, objectivity, and reliability in historical narratives.
