Abstract

Objectives: This study examines the pragmatic intentions behind the indefiniteness of the subject in a nominal sentence, within the requirements of communication, contextual situation, the speaker's intent, and the effect of the indefiniteness on the receiver.

Methods: The study adopts a pragmatic approach to analyze the phenomenon of indefiniteness in the subject. It begins with a brief overview of this phenomenon in traditional grammatical studies, which considered the definition of the subject as the norm, and set conditions for its indefiniteness, mostly based on the syntactic rules of the sentence in isolation from its pragmatic context. This led to confusion and artificial constraints, prompting a reconsideration from a pragmatic perspective, supported by evidence from Arabic texts where the subject is indefinite, and analyzing theses texts pragmatically.

Results: The study concludes that indefiniteness of the subject serves intentional, communicative, and pragmatic purposes, related either to the speaker, the context, or the receiver, which justify the subject being indefinite.

Conclusion: The indefiniteness of the subject in the nominal sentence in Arabic serves specific purposes for the speaker, it is driven by contextual and communicative needs, and has an impact on the receiver.
