Abstract

Objectives: This research aims to define the concept of "dualism of place", and to reveal manifestations of the duality of place in the novel of “Asilah”, especially the duality of domestic and non-domestic places (the hostile) as it plays a crucial role in this novel.

Methods: The research adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, as it described and analyzed the duality of place in the novel Asilah and explored its semantic aspects. It adopted the theoretical concepts of Gaston Bachelard about the place, to show the nature of the relationship and interaction between the narrator and the main character and place in the novel.

Results: The findings of this research demonstrated that place in the novel occupied a prominent position in the novel itself and its components as shown in the novel understudy; the city of Asilah was the main topic in the novel. Due to this fact, this novel can be considered as a spatial novel par excellence. The place in the novel was clearly highlighted to address the civilized and cultural encounter between the East and the West.

Conclusions: The spatial dualism can be seen clearly in the novel and in the duality of the hostile place and the familiar place which all together formed the basis for presenting the writer’s vision toward the world.
