Objectives: This research aimed to examine the temporal structure in Hadeeth Isa Ibn Hisham by Al-Muwaylihi in light of Gérard Genette’s theory, to reveal its semantic and aesthetic dimensions. The study addresses the lack of sufficient modern narrative analysis of this text, which has often been studied as a representation of the beginnings of traditional Arabic storytelling.
Methodology: The research followed a descriptive-analytical approach, employing Gérard Genette’s concepts to explore the relationship between narrative time and story time, alongside insights from critics focused on narrative techniques, particularly those related to temporal aspects. It further examined the temporal structure in Hadeeth Isa Ibn Hisham, analyzing levels of temporal construction and the interplay between narrative time, characters, and space.
Results: The study revealed key temporal features in Hadeeth Isa Ibn Hisham, including deviations such as flashbacks (analepsis) and foreshadowing (prolepsis), which effectively capture temporal motion and sequence. Narrative pacing techniques like summary, ellipsis, scene, and descriptive pause regulate the story's rhythm, alternating between speed and slowness.
Conclusion: Despite its classical roots, Hadeeth Isa Ibn Hisham incorporates advanced narrative techniques related to time, such as temporal deviations and manipulations. These methods serve critical social purposes, reflecting Al-Muwaylihi’s awareness of modern narrative structures and highlighting his significant contribution to establishing Arabic narrative art with exceptional skill.
