Abstract

Objectives: This paper aims to measure the impact of the oratorio in general and the Sky and Earth oratorio in particular on promoting a culture of coexistence and tolerance as well as renouncing extremism.

Methods: The paper adopts an exploratory approach through conducting a questionnaire which was divided into three parts: art and society, orchestral composition and its impact on combating extremeism, and the role of the Sky and Earth oratorio—composed by the researcher—in promoting coexistence and combating extremism. The third part included an audio recording of the oratorio in question accessible to the 552 study participants.

Results: The study shows that the Sky and Earth oratorio greatly contributes to promoting a culture of coexistence and combating extremism. It also shows that orchestral composition in general has a remarkable effect on combating extremism.

Conclusions: The study recommends that more attention should be paid to oratorios that focus on social issues and thus influence the behavior of both individuals and societies. It also calls for showing more interest in Arab orchestral compositions which depict Arab culture in its different forms and popularizing them worldwide.
