Social Media, Emotional Separation, Nushuz, I'raadh.Abstract
Objectives: The study aimed to clarify the impact of social media on emotional separation between spouses, as well as to deduce the legal and doctrinal implications related to the term "emotional separation." It also sought to define and explain the Islamic educational methodology for addressing this issue.
Methods: The study employed an inductive, analytical, and deductive approach, by reviewing and analyzing the relevant literature to assess the extent of social media's impact on emotional separation between spouses. Additionally, it sought to derive solutions and ways in which Islamic law addresses this issue.
Results: Some of the prominent effects of social media on emotional separation include comparison and jealousy toward social media influencers, neglect, waning love, selfish behavior, and feelings of isolation and anxiety regarding the continuity of the marital relationship. This also includes the escape from the real world into the virtual one to compensate for emotional deficiency by establishing forbidden online relationships. The legal implications of emotional separation are reflected in the terms "nushuz" (disobedience) and "i'raadh" (rejection), which are addressed by adhering to a correct and logically applied Islamic methodology.
Conclusion: There is a need to strengthen educational curricula and media platforms with awareness programs aimed at instilling core values between spouses, educating them on the effects and dangers of excessive social media use on family structure in general, and on marital relationships in particular.
