Abstract

Objectives: This research aims to define the methods of stunning animals and the practices followed in modern slaughterhouses. It also seeks to establish the legal ruling of stunning animals for the purpose of slaughter and to clarify the consequential ruling regarding the permissibility of consuming such animals.

Methods: The study employed the descriptive method to describe the process of animal stunning and the techniques used in modern slaughterhouses. It also utilized the analytical and comparative methods to analyze these techniques in relation to the requirements of Islamic slaughter, and to deduce the legal rulings associated with this practice.

Results: The study concluded that, in principle, it is forbidden to harm animals unless there is a legitimate justification. Stunning with blunt force, respiratory suffocation, or high electrical current before slaughter is impermissible, as it causes severe pain and effectively kills the animal, rendering it carrion even if blood is drained or the animal moves upon slaughter. However, it is permissible to stun using a medium electrical current that does not damage the brain but only temporarily numbs the animal, as this does not invalidate the slaughter. If animals die during stunning or after being removed from the stunning device before slaughter, they become carrion and cannot be made lawful by subsequent slaughter.

Conclusions: The scientific value of this research lies in its focus on the jurisprudential analysis of animal stunning based on Sharia texts and their application to modern stunning practices used in contemporary slaughterhouses. The research addresses both the legal ruling and the consequential ruling regarding animal stunning.
