Abstract

Objectives: This research investigates language dynamics in the ExxonMobil mining industrialization area in Bojonegoro, Indonesia. Despite the impact of industrialization and economic development on language shift, this study highlights how loyalty to local languages can resist these influences, leading to language maintenance. The goal is to understand the factors behind language preservation and shift, as well as efforts to uphold the local language.

Methods: The research focuses on the Gayam District, specifically Braboan, Gayam, and Kalitidu villages. Data collected from 300 individuals of different age groups were analyzed using a mixed-method approach involving a questionnaire, interviews, and observations.

Results: The analysis, based on language vitality indexes, reveals that Javanese language in the industrialization area remains stable, reflecting language maintenance. However, Indonesian language is under threat and shows signs of language shift. Factors like family, familiarity, and adherence to social and cultural norms drive language loyalty. Government language policies, while intended to promote language use, can sometimes exacerbate linguistic conflicts, rather than prevent them.

Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the Javanese language in the ExxonMobil mining industrial area of Bojonegoro remains robust, with a vitality index of 1.0, signifying a stable and safe status despite industrialization. Community-driven efforts, cultural pride, and intergenerational transmission have effectively preserved the language, even as it expands into formal domains traditionally dominated by Indonesian.
