Objectives: The study aims to uncover the critical thought of Abu Al-Hasan Ali bin Ahmed bin Lubbal Al-Shuraishi (d. 582 AH) by analyzing the critical dimensions within his treatise The Garden of the Writer in the Preference between Al-Mutanabbi and Habib. It also compares his perspectives to those of Andalusian critics in the 5th and 6th centuries AH and explores the alignment between his theoretical criticism and poetic practice.
Methods: A comparative analytical approach was employed to elucidate the critical issues raised in Ibn Lubbal’s treatise and compare them to dominant Andalusian literary criticism during or slightly preceding his time.
Results: The study identified key aspects of Ibn Lubbal’s critical thought, including discussions on nature vs. craftsmanship, diction and meaning, clarity and ambiguity, truth and fabrication, and the essence of poetry. These themes were compared with contemporary Andalusian critical perspectives, revealing significant harmony between Ibn Lubbal’s theoretical insights and his poetic expressions.
Conclusions: The research concludes that Ibn Lubbal’s critical thought is profound and integrative, situating him among the most notable Andalusian critics. His treatise represents a significant continuation of the critical dialogue surrounding figures like Al-Mutanabbi and Abu Tammam, and his poetry reflects an application of these critical principles.
