Objectives: This study examines the importance of using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in documentary filmmaking. It also identifies the visual storytelling challenges that are associated with employing AI in the creation and production of documentary films.
Methods: The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach to analyze a sample of documentary films that used AI technologies to different extents. The first, a short video from the series “Masks and Treasures”, incorporated AI minimally during production. The second, “Hope Is the Last to Die”, was generated entirely using AI.
Results: AI improved both samples, i.e., the partially AI-assisted short documentary and the fully AI-generated film, by enabling the reconstruction of historical scenes, enhancing visual storytelling, and increasing production efficiency. At the same time, outputs often showed reduced emotional nuance and a diminished human expressive quality. This is particularly serious in works addressing sensitive humanitarian themes, where AI use may lower audience engagement.
Conclusions: Artificial intelligence is a revolutionary tool in documentary filmmaking that can potentially transform this art form. Nevertheless, its adoption requires a thoughtful approach that balances technical efficiency with artistic value. Considering machine and human elements. Filmmakers should use AI tools to enhance human creativity and embrace diversity rather than replacing them.
