Objectives: This research aims to study the specificity of Arabic calligraphy in enhancing authenticity and identity in the contemporary interior spaces of mosques.
Methods: The research follows a descriptive approach in analyzing the study samples, by collecting a sample of mosques in Asia from 2009 to 2015. The sample consisted of three contemporary mosques where Arabic calligraphy was employed in their interior spaces, which helped achieve the research's objectives.
Findings:
- Analysis showed that authenticity and modernity complement each other in mosque interiors, achieved through the unique use of Arabic calligraphy and modern techniques like laser engraving, enhancing Arab identity and Islamic culture.
- The design of the mosques was directly influenced by Arabic calligraphy, with its integration adding a distinctive character to the space.
- The use of Quranic verses and Allah’s names in modern techniques achieved a balance between tradition and modernity, giving each mosque a unique identity.
Conclusions: Arabic calligraphy plays a significant role in shaping the identity of the interior space of mosques. Its uniqueness, rooted in Arab culture and language, is reflected in the overall interior designs, particularly in mosques. This identity is reinforced by linking the calligraphy to the users, whether they are worshippers or visitors, as the reflection of Arabic calligraphy imparts a spiritual and distinct character to the interior space in contemporary ways. This integration, using modern techniques and materials, generates an element of attraction and innovation.
