Objectives: This study examines the evolution of women's representation in the Jordanian House of Representatives and Senate from 1947 to 2024. It traces this development from the enactment of the Jordanian Constitution No. (3) in 1947, which established the National Assembly comprising both chambers and entrusted them, alongside the King, with legislative authority, up to the present day in 2024.
Methods: The study employs a historical approach to track the progression of women's representation in the House of Representatives and the Senate over the period 1947–2024. Additionally, it adopts analytical and legal methodologies to interpret the factors that contributed to this development.
Results: The study reveals that women's membership in the House of Representatives between 1993 and 2016 ranged from 1 to 20 members, following a generally upward trend, peaking in the 18th Parliament with the highest female representation. However, this number declined in the 19th Parliament in 2020 before rising again in the 20th Parliament in 2024, reaching 27 seats. In the Senate, there have been 29 sessions since 1947. Women's participation in the Senate began in the 16th session in 1989, marking the first female representation in its history. Since then, the number of female members in the Senate has ranged between 1 and 10, also following a relatively upward trajectory.
Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of continuing both official and grassroots efforts to enhance women's ability to contribute effectively to shaping the future.
