Abstract

Objectives: This study evaluates the impact of the amendments to Jordan's 2022 Political Parties Law on political awareness and participation among University of Jordan students. It examines the influence of various factors, such as gender, specialization, academic year, and major, on students’ political engagement. Additionally, the study explores differences in political awareness and participation among students based on their demographic backgrounds.

Methods: The study employed an exploratory, descriptive, and analytical research design, using an online survey technique. It focused on the views and opinions of University of Jordan students regarding the impact of the law amendments on political awareness and participation. The sample consisted of 400 undergraduate students.

Results: The findings indicate a significant positive relationship between the law amendments and both political participation and political awareness. The results also highlight that urban students exhibit higher levels of awareness and participation compared to their rural peers.

Conclusions: Based on the findings, the study emphasizes the importance of integrating political education into university curricula, promoting participatory opportunities, and addressing geographic disparities in political engagement. These efforts aim to cultivate a politically informed and active youth population, contributing to Jordan's democratic development. The study suggests that policymakers in universities should incorporate modules on political systems and legislative frameworks into curricula. This initiative would not only educate students about their rights and responsibilities but also foster a culture of informed political participation.
