Objectives: The objective of this paper is to compare the first edition (1973) and the revised version (2004) of Faisal Hourani's Arabic novel al-muḥāṣarūn (The Besieged), with the aim of understanding the artistic and political choices behind the rewriting, particularly how political factors may have influenced the revision process.
Method: The study adopts a comparative textual and stylistic analysis of the two editions, examining changes in narrative voice, lexical choices, and setting. Special attention is given to literary techniques employed in the rewriting, as well as the broader historical and political context surrounding the production of the second edition.
Results: The study reveals that the second edition softens the novel’s earlier tone through strategies such as anonymization, euphemization, and narrativization. These choices reflect a shift in the text’s ideological framing, likely influenced by changing political realities. In contrast to literary cases such as James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, where revision enhances the original, Hourani’s second edition appears less bold both artistically and politically.
Conclusion: The conclusion highlights the significance of the political and historical context in shaping the second edition of the novel, where the aesthetic intentions behind the revisions were overshadowed by political considerations. By foregrounding these contextual influences, the study illustrates how literature may be shaped by both artistic and political pressures, with the writer navigating a shifting landscape of expectations and constraints.
