Abstract

Objectives: This study analyzes currency as a strategic instrument of power, traces the rise of the BRICS bloc and its economic‑strategic objectives, and assesses the prospective BRICS currency—its opportunities, challenges, and potential impact on the global financial order.

Methods: A descriptive‑analytical approach is employed to review the theoretical and economic foundations of BRICS monetary ambitions, while a futures‑oriented perspective outlines possible scenarios for currency‑driven change in the international system.

Results: The findings indicate that currencies function as pivotal levers in the global balance of power, and BRICS intends to exploit this fact to accelerate a shift from unipolarity to multipolarity. Although deep economic asymmetries and political divergences among member states pose serious hurdles, a successful BRICS currency would reduce their dependence on the US dollar and enhance monetary autonomy. Achieving this, however, depends on installing advanced financial‑technological infrastructures and sustaining political consensus across the bloc.

Conclusions: A unified BRICS currency would represent a significant geostrategic step capable of challenging dollar hegemony and reshaping global economic relations. Despite structural and geopolitical obstacles, such a currency offers the bloc a tangible opportunity to expand its influence. The study underscores the need for harmonized financial policies and robust institutional coordination among BRICS members to build credibility and unlock the new currency’s full strategic potential.
