Abstract

Objectives: This study analyzes the social causes of obesity among university youth in the Sultanate of Oman, explores the resulting social effects, and proposes effective prevention strategies from a social work perspective.

Methods: A descriptive-analytical approach was applied using both quantitative and qualitative methods within a mixed methods research framework. The sample included students from different colleges and academic levels at Dhofar University, as well as experts from Dhofar Governorate specializing in health and social work during the 2024/2025 academic year.

Results: Findings revealed that the main social causes of obesity are limited family awareness, gender-related pressures, and the influence of customs and media. Obesity was also found to negatively affect social relationships, self-confidence, and community participation.

Conclusions: The study recommends strengthening the role of social work specialists in awareness programs addressing social and health dimensions, encouraging early intervention, and promoting preventive activities within the university environment.
