Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to identify the impact of participation in voluntary work in community in  enhancing civic responsibility among Tafila Technical University students.

Methods: To achieve its goal, the study used an experimental approach with a quasi-experimental design. A community volunteer program was developed, comprising a set of activities and initiatives designed to strengthen the concepts of belonging, active citizenship, and community engagement among students. A specific scale was also constructed to measure the level of civic responsibility, aiming to assess the extent of change in this variable before and after participation in the program. The study sample consisted of 50 male and female students from Tafila Technical University, selected through a convenience sampling approach and split into two groups: One experimental group (25 students) took part in the volunteer program, while the other (25 students) served as the control group.

Results: The study  results showed  statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the two groups on the civic responsibility scale, in favor of the experimental group.

Conclusions: The study asserts the importance of strengthening a university student's sense of civic identity. This can only be accomplished by activating purposeful community volunteer programs that address real societal needs. The study also recommends that such programs solidify a sense of national belonging, cultivate the ability to make a  positive change, hone students' experiences in various fields, and increase their participation in decision-making, all in line with the requirements of the labour market.
