Objectives: This study aims to analyze the spatial characteristics of Gorontalo City and how local cultural philosophy influences the city's urban layout.
Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was used, employing a rationalistic methodology to analyze the physical and philosophical elements that shape Gorontalo’s structure.
Results: The research revealed that Gorontalo City’s spatial configuration is unique, characterized by a box-shaped layout representing the four natural elements: water, fire, wind and earth integrated with human consciousness, with the mosque as the symbolic center. The study demonstrates that the spatial characteristics of Gorontalo City are deeply influenced by the cultural philosophy of the Gorontalo people.
Conclusions: The findings emphasize the importance of understanding the relationship between urban space and local cultural philosophy for other cities seeking to develop a distinct urban identity. The spatial characteristics of Gorontalo consist of three key elements: (1) human resources, encompassing social, cultural, economic, and religious activities; (2) artificial resources, including architectural forms and open spaces; and (3) natural resources, covering land and territorial potential. Three primary meanings emerge from the analysis: (1) symbolic meaning, (2) historical meaning, and (3) functional meaning. This research underscores the importance of incorporating cultural philosophy into urban planning to ensure sustainable and identity driven city development.
