Abstract

Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the relative contribution of perceived parenting styles and emotional sensitivity in avoidant personality disorder symptoms among Yarmouk University students.

Methods: The descriptive and predictive method was used by distributing the study questionnaire to 742 students through the e-mail provided by Yarmouk University to its students.

Results: The findings of the study indicated that the most prominent styles of parenting for the image of the father and the image of the mother were the style, followed by the authoritarian style, then the permissive style. The results also revealed that the overall level of negative emotional sensitivity among the participants was moderate. Additionally, the prevalence of avoidant personality disorder symptoms was found to be 6.3%, and a correlation was observed between overall negative emotional sensitivity and avoidant personality disorder. However, no significant associations were found between other variables such as parenting styles, gender, college, and study level.

Conclusions: These results highlight the importance of implementing counseling programs in Jordanian universities, as they play a crucial role in enabling students to address psychological disorders and related problems.
