Abstract

The study aims to adjust the definition of quotation from Quran and Hadith, make a fine difference between quotation and representation in an attempt to formulate the necessary controls for each quotation to be acceptable and accurate. To achieve this objective, the study employed an inferential design of modern and ancient scholars’ sayings and opinions in quotation, its conditions and controls. In addition, the study used an analytical and deductive design to extract the necessary controls of quotation and distinguish between them and other conditions not required for quoting. The study concluded with several results, the most significant of which is that accurate quotation is stipulated by several terms. This includes the fact that a quoted word is permitted if being uttered by an individual (speaker or recipient) and that the quoted word must not be forbidden, denied or taken as a form of sarcasm. Furthermore, the utterances from Quran or Hadith must be used with an accurate Arabic denotation, and that the poet or writer should not overuse quotation so as the majority of his words are mere quotations.
