Abstract

Objectives: This research indicates the effect of substituting an original letter with another in a word on the Quranic variant readings and the connotations of the resulting word pairs, on the one hand, and their cohesion and coherence on the other, all contributing to enrich meanings of the Quranic verses.

Methods: This study uses the inductive research method through which Quranic readings that involve letter substitutions are furnished, referring to some established Quranic variants resources. The content analysis and, subsequently, the critical approach are used to clarify the differences between the resulting readings and meanings. The selected ten words were recited with two different, verbally, and semantically, readings.

Results: The study presents several results: substituting one letter in a word with another either enriches and expands the verse’s meaning, contributes to the general meaning of the pair when they integrate, indicates the inevitability of the meaning of the other reading, or confirms the verse’s general meaning.

Conclusions: The study concluded the need to implement the two frequent readings in which another letter substitutes the original letter in a word within the Quranic verse where the verse’s general meaning remains intact in a way that is consistent with the axis and the central pillar of the surah. It also recommends conducting further research and studies concerning the difference in the Quranic readings and the effect of the resulting difference on the Quranic interpretation and the scope of its meanings, on the one hand, and the Quranic miraculous aspects, on the other.
