Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a Criterion-Referenced Test for Arabic language skills targeting third-grade students in Zarqa province and to verify its psychometric properties.

Methods: Content analysis was conducted on the reading book used for third-grade primary classes, identifying key reading skills and sub-skills. An initial version of the test was created, consisting of 27 multiple-choice items with four alternatives, one of which was correct. The test was administered to a standardization sample of 644 students randomly selected from third-grade classes in state schools under the Zarqa First Education Directorate during the 2021-2022 school year.

Results: The study's results indicated that the test items exhibited an appropriate level of difficulty, discrimination, and effectiveness. The test also demonstrated good content validity and internal consistency. Additionally, cut-off scores for each reading skill were determined, with phonemic awareness skill having the lowest cut-off score, while the highest cut-off score was observed for the reading skill "Letter sounds."

Conclusions: The test developed in this study is recommended for measuring students' Arabic language skills based on the RAMP initiative. It is also crucial to implement professional development programs for teachers focusing on Building Criterion-Referenced tests and analyzing and interpreting the test results.
