Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify narrators about whom Imam Ahmad said: "I only know good" in his book: al-`Ilal wa Ma‘rifat al-Rijal, and to find out what he intended by using such a statement against them.

Methods: The study followed the inductive-analytical approach represented by following the narrators about whom Imam Ahmad said, "I only know good," and each translation of them, using scientific translation according to the rules of vouching and discrediting. Then, the study compared the statements of Hadith critics with Ahmad's in order to reach his intention of releasing this term.

Results: The number of narrators about whom Imam Ahmad said: "I don't know, or what I know, or what I only knew is good" in his book: al-`Ilal wa Ma‘rifat al-Rijal, amounted to thirty narrators, and it turned out that Imam Ahmad only calls this term in the right of trust, truthfulness, and the weak who did not reach the point of leaving and falling and also against the different among Hadith critics. The presumption of the case is indicative of this, where the number of the trustworthy was sixteen narrators, the truthful were eight narrators, and the weak were two narrators, and those controversial were four narrators.

Conclusions: The study recommends studying the wound and modification terms by Hadith critics and comparing them with each other's sayings to find out their connotations and to identify the conditions described by the narrator’s acceptance or response.
