Social Intelligence in Kindergarten Children and Its Relationship to Their Attachment Patterns from Their Mothers' Point of View

Abstract

 

Objectives: The current study aimed to identify the level of social intelligence among kindergarten children, the predominant attachment style from the perspective of their mothers, and to examine the correlational relationship between social intelligence and attachment styles in these children.

Methods: To achieve the study's objectives, a descriptive correlational approach was used. The study sample consisted of the mothers of 349 kindergarten boys and girls, selected through convenience sampling from public kindergartens affiliated with the directorates of education in the Amman Capital District. This was done in cooperation with the administrations of these kindergartens, which permitted the implementation of the study tools on the targeted sample. Two scales were used: the Attachment Styles Scale employed in the study by Al-Salhout (2016), and a Social Intelligence Scale for kindergarten children developed by the researcher. Both scales were validated for reliability and accuracy.

Results: The results showed that the level of social intelligence among the children in the study sample was high, and the predominant attachment style was secure attachment. The results also indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between the secure attachment style and the level of social intelligence in the study sample. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between insecure attachment styles and the level of social intelligence among the children.

Conclusion: The study found a positive correlation between secure attachment and social intelligence, while insecure attachment styles showed a negative correlation. It recommends raising mothers’ awareness about building secure attachments to support their children’s social and psychological development.
