Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to examine body image and its relationship with shyness level among obese individuals attending fitness centers.

Methods: The study utilized a descriptive survey method with a sample size of 258 individuals, representing 70.6% of the total study population. A 27-item (3-option Likert) body image scale and an 18-item (5-option Likert) shyness scale were employed for data collection. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, incorporating descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation tests to explore associations between variables.

Results: The findings revealed a low level of body image, with no statistically significant differences observed in body image based on age and marital status. However, significant differences were found concerning gender and training period, favoring males and those with a training period of two years or more. On the other hand, the study indicated a high level of shyness, with no statistically significant differences related to marital status, age, and training period. Nevertheless, gender differences were observed, favoring females. Furthermore, the study identified a statistically negative correlation between body image and shyness levels.

Conclusions: The study suggests the importance of further investigations into body image and shyness, encompassing other categories and socio-demographic variables.
