Abstract

This study aims at investigating pragmatics in Mahmoud Darwish’s “why Have you Left the Horse Alone?” It’s based on two aspects: 1. Theoretical; in which the researcher will clarify the theories of pragmatics. 2. Applied; The research problem lies in employing the pragmatic theory to find out evidences from Mahmoud Darwish’s collection of poems basically related to pragmatics. It also investigates the connotations included in the samples then criticizes and clarifies them in accordance with the rhetorical lesson. The pragmatic theory was followed in studying certain poetic texts of Mahmoud Darwish’s “Why Have You Left the Horse Alone?” using strategies of context approach – one of which – is structuralism. The pragmatic theory was adopted because of the great effect of pragmatics and because earlier critical theories haven’t tackled the deficiency in other critical studies. More specifically, the researcher focuses on things ignored by other critical approaches and theories like all the important factors of producing a text such as: context, status, culture, purpose, and situation
