The Effectiveness of a Cognitive Supervision Program in Improving Counseling Skills and Reducing Performance Anxiety among Trainee Counselors in Counseling Programs for Abused Women. Qualitative Study

Objectives: The study aimed to identify the effectiveness of a cognitive supervision program in improving counseling skills and reducing performance anxiety among trainee counselors in counseling programs for abused women,
Methods: The qualitative approach was used on a sample of (30) trainee counselors from psychological counseling students at the University of Jordan and Yarmouk University. The sample was selected intentionally.
Results: The results indicated that there are professional obstacles before they took a Cognitive Supervision Program represented by the failure to use tests and measures at their appropriate time and place, the difficulty of their reliance on these standards and tests by observing some important variables, and their inability to combine empathy with abused women and objectivity. The results also showed that some psychological problems represented by the presence of feelings of anxiety and tension. The results also indicated that the cognitive supervisory program has helped them solve problems, and it also contributed to improving the level of interpersonal relationships among the trainee mentors due to the improvement in their self-management.
Conclusions: The study recommends working on designing training programs according to the cognitive supervisory model and utilizing the individual supervision approach (one-on-one) to examine the case of each trainee supervisor individually. Additionally, conducting numerous research studies on supervision and training for supervisors, organizing conferences and courses that address the cognitive supervisory program.
