Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to identify the spiritual and popular values and the mechanism of deriving and embodying them in Jordanian theater, which has not been separated from the influences of global and Arab theater and the reflected intellectual, spiritual, popular values, and artistic structures. Jordanian theater artists drew inspiration from the cultural data, values, and rituals that characterized Jordanian life within its various historical transformations. The study aimed to answer the following questions: How were spiritual and popular values manifested in the Jordanian theatrical performance, how were those values derived and inspired, and to what extent did the Jordanian theatrical performance benefit from alternative spaces to express spiritual and popular values.

Method: The researcher followed the descriptive-analytical method, selecting three samples of Jordanian theater performances: "An Evening with Abu Layla Al-Mahlal", "Sheikh Al-Qal'a", and "Al-Ilahia".

Results: The researcher concluded that the spiritual and popular values in Jordanian theatrical performance were based on the anthropology of Jordanian and Arab society, relying on the vocabulary of popular spiritual celebrations by restructuring and formulating them with a modern concept and directly addressing the Arab collective consciousness.

Conclusion: Spiritual and popular values were evident in the Jordanian theatrical performance through the theatrical groups' engagement in employing and drawing inspiration from popular heritage and spiritual rituals with a dramatic dimension, and the nature of the adopted spaces for expressing them in Jordanian theatrical performance.
