Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the impact of a strategy based on mental habits on developing listening skills among ninth-grade female students.
Methods: The study utilized a quasi-experimental approach, and the participants consisted of 58 female students from Khawla Bint Al Azwar School in Irbid Governorate. They were randomly divided into two groups: experimental and control. The participants underwent a pre-test to verify its validity and reliability. The experimental group received training on listening skills using a strategy based on mental habits, while the control group was taught using the conventional method. Afterward, the students underwent a post-test.
Results: The study revealed statistically significant differences in the average performance of the experimental group compared to the control group in listening skills (auditory discrimination, inferential thinking, judging the authenticity of content, and content evaluation) both individually and collectively in favor of the experimental group. The results also indicated an increase in the students' vocabulary, improved use of ideas and meanings, dealing with images and mental images, an appreciation for music, and an increased motivation in dealing with emotions during listening skills.
Conclusion: It is essential to raise awareness about the importance of mental habits and their application for learners and educators in various subjects. Further experimental studies are needed to explore other language skills in different educational levels.
