Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to survey the opinions of educational counselors in Jordan about the importance of using information and communication technology in career counseling for school students and to determine the extent to which their opinions are affected by some demographic variables.

Methods: This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to achieve its objectives. The sample consisted of 106 male and female educational counselors who participated in this study. An opinion scale on using the Internet to provide school counseling services was used to collect the data required for the study.

Results: The study results showed that educational counselors had positive opinions and attitudes regarding the usefulness of employing information and communication technology in career counseling. The results also  revealed their deep  conviction of the importance of integrating information and communication technology in the field of career counseling, benefiting from modern technological outputs, and keeping up with the requirements of the twenty-first century. Educational counselors’ opinions were affected by the academic qualification variable favoring higher academic qualifications and the school classification variable favoring private schools. The opinions of educational counselors were not affected by gender or age.

Conclusions: The study recommends the importance of developing psychological and educational counseling programs in higher education institutions, designing in-service training programs in the Ministry of Education to develop and improve educational counselors’ skills in using information and communications technology in their work, and conducting future studies to identify the opportunities and challenges of using information and communications technology in professional counseling.
