The Jordanian Experience in Media and Information Literacy: A Case Study on the Jordanian Media Institute Project

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the reality of the Jordanian experience in the field of media and information education by studying the Jordan Media Institute project as a model for the projects concerned in this field in Jordan.

Methods: The research relied on the case study approach within the descriptive methodology, using an unstructured interview tool with a purposive sample composed of four of the officials responsible for managing and implementing the project. The research focused on identifying the foundational steps of the Jordan Media Institute project for media and information education and the reality of the work and implementation mechanisms. It also focused on identifying the challenges and obstacles facing the project and revealing its future aspirations and hopes.

Results: The project began as an initial idea and vision in 2013 with the aim of developing the skills of Jordanian journalists and media professionals in covering parliamentary elections in Jordan at the time. It was officially launched in 2016 in cooperation with UNESCO and with funding from the European Union. The project later expanded to target all segments of the Jordanian society in all the governorates of the kingdom. Since its inception, the project has been preparing a number of educational and training curricula and guides. Since 2018 it has started implementing training of trainers (TOT) courses in the field of media and information education, resulting in the formation of a reasonable number of new trainers. Today, the project faces a financial challenge that hinders the expansion of its training programs. Finally, the project looks forward to institutionalizing its work in this field and making it part of the work of institutions in the public and private sectors, in addition to sustaining efforts in training and capacity building.

Conclusion: The project succeeded in pushing the Jordanian government to adopt the perspective of media and information education and prioritize it, making Jordan the first Arab country to issue a national strategic plan to promote the concepts and skills of media and information education, working to build balanced attitudes among members of the Jordanian society towards media and information.
