Abstract

Objectives: The present study investigates the semantic differences between three Arabic words Alfi‘il, Al‘amal and AlSun‘ translating to (verb, action, and creation) and their conjugations in the Holy Quran based on the contextual spaces they operate within. It attempts to discover the impact of each word's presence in guiding the meaning.

Methods: The study relies on a descriptive-analytical methodology. It presents the lexical and idiomatic differences of the studied words and then examines several Quranic contexts in which those words appeared which are thoroughly analyzed. This is done based on major dictionaries and linguistic and exegesis references.

Results: The study revealed a clear variation in the semantic function when using the words Alfi‘il, Al‘amal and AlSun‘ in the Holy Quran. The word "Alfi’il" (verb) and its conjugations mostly appear in conjunction with rational beings and rarely with non-rational beings. In the contexts where it appears with non-rational beings, it is metaphorically attributed with the status of a rational being. On the other hand, the meaning of the word "Al’amal" (action) and its conjugations is directed towards the purposes of moderation, temporal extension, intellectual engagement, and management. As for the word "AlSun’" (creation) and its conjugations, they are specifically associated with the notions of mastery and excellence, representing the highest level of action.

Conclusion: The study concludes that alfi‘il is a general term and, al‘amal is more specific, while alSun‘ is the most specific and requires more precision. It is also concluded that each context needs only one of these to convey a particular meaning which the others cannot indicate.
