The Use of Excitement in Arab Talk Shows: An Analytical Study of the Two Programs ‘Ahmar Belkat Al Areed’ and ‘Ajra Al Kalam’

Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to identify the methods in which excitement can be employed in television programs focusing namely on ‘Agara Al Kalam’ which is broadcasted by the Egyptian channel Al-Qahera wa Al-Nas, and ‘Ahmar Bel Khat Al-Areed’ which is broadcasted by the Lebanese satellite channel LBC.

Methods: The study relied on the survey method and employed the content analysis method in its application on (182) episodes of the two programs in the years (2012/2013). A systematic random sampling method was used to select the episodes; namely, (48) episodes from both programs were selcted, equivalent to (25%) of the total number of episodes (182) by using (Industrial Week). The results were extracted using the two tools "content analysis form" through the analysis index, and "observation".

Results: The results of the study showed that the two programs tend to use political topics in the first place with a rate of (51.6%), followed by social topics with a percentage of (38.9%), then religious topics with a percentage of (7.4%), and finally technical topics, with a percentage of (2.1%). Both programs used the topic of illegal sexual relations, with a rate of (54.2%), and they focused on using emotional methods, with a rate of (76.2%).

Conclusions: The study found that the two programs focused on exciting the viewers through the use of quick, attractive clips. In addition, the objectives of the presenters of the two programs were to publicize the issue without often providing solutions for it.
