The Emergence and Development of the Digital Educational Platforms and their Geographical Dimensions in Jordan

Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to analyze the emergence of electronic educational platforms and their geographical distribution in Jordan. In addition, it aimed to analyze the economic and educational role of these platforms from the students’ perspective.

Methods: The study relied on the historical (evolutionary) approach, to analyze the emergence of electronic educational platforms, from the perspective of the evolutionary economic geography. In addition, the descriptive and analytical statistical method was used to analyze the data derived from the questionnaire, which was distributed to a sample of 3,133 students, using the SPSS software. The behavioral approach was also used to analyze students' perceptions toward electronic educational platforms, the motives for their participation in sush platforms, and their relationship to their personal characteristics.

Results: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to increased reliance on electronic platforms and that the life cycle of economic institutions applies to these platforms. The primary motivations for students to subscribe to the platforms were the ability to review lessons multiple times and at any time, as well as the opportunity to learn from distinguished teachers regardless of their location, in addition to reducing the cost of private education. The results revealed significant economic and educational impacts of electronic platforms, particularly their role in spreading education to remote areas and reducing the need for transportation to traditional learning centers, thus decreasing transportation costs. The study supported the hypothesis that the initial diffusion of digital platforms is urban, gradually transitioning to rural and marginal areas over time.

Conclusions: The present study emphasizes the significance of the digital educational economy both economically and educationally, as a modern form of the digital economy in Jordan. It analyzed the motivations of platform users, their geographic distribution, and the challenges they face, providing the first insights into this field. The study recommends further research on other forms of the digital economy, such as the sharing economy, in sectors like transportation or tourism, to provide a more comprehensive picture of the digital economy in Jordan.
