Abstract

Objectives: This research examined idiomatic expressions in the book (Al-Mu’jam Alarabi Al-Mujasi) from two areas: theoretical which studies the concept of idioms, their characteristics, and their patterns, while applied monitors expressions that belong to this phenomenon, and classifies them based on the pattern according to which they came in statistical tables to identify their structure (e.g., noun + noun) or (noun + verb) or (noun + adjective)...etc.

Methods: The research employed the descriptive approach in its theoretical and applied aspects, to clarify the limits framed for idiomatic expressions and describe their structural features, as well as to analyze the structures that were monitored in the Arabic Dictionary. Some samples were selected from the types of expressions included in the dictionary for demonstration, representation and explanation.

Results: The dictionary contained three types of idiomatic expressions, namely: (Quranic), (collecting), and (proverb), the second constituted the ratio in the lexicon, and the idiomatic expressions in all forms were included under multiple forms of synthetic patterns, and some of them were subject to the attribution relationship, including the addition and the graphical relationship.

Conclusions: The research concluded that idiomatic expressions contributed to the enrichment of the language with new meanings, as these expressions present a meaning not in one of its expressions alone, but rather is the result of the association between its expressions. It arises thanks to the attraction of its components, a semantic and synthetic attraction that generates a new entity that is a composite nucleus whose isolated elements have no value.
