Abstract

Objectives: This research aims to identify the effectiveness of a counseling program based on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills in improving difficulty in emotional regulation among female inmates of the central prison in the Sultanate of Oman.

Methods:  The research sample consisted of twelve female inmates. The research followed the explanatory sequential mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) and employed triangulation. To answer the research questions, the researcher used tools: (i) a counseling program design, (ii) the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale (DERS) prepared by Hallion et al. (2018), translated to Arabic by the researcher, and (iii) semi-structured interviews.

Results: The results showed that the counseling program based on the skills of dialectical behavior therapy had a positive effect on the female inmates. There were statistically significant differences in the scores of the research sample between the pre, post, and follow-up measurements in favor of the post and follow-up measurements; generally, training on dialectical behavior therapy skills improves the difficulties of emotional regulation among the prison inmates. Accordingly, the researcher concluded with a set of recommendations and suggestions.

Conclusions: The results of this study came to confirm many recommendations, including: There is a need to conduct future research into the effectiveness of dialectical behavioral therapy skills on (male) inmates in prison, and to increase the use of more adaptive coping skills.
