Objectives: Cafés have been linked to changes that influenced local societal values. They aid in fulfilling social interaction and belonging needs. Current study was initiated to understand reality of café attendance and its relationship with societal values among Saudi youth.
Methodology: Social survey method was employed, with study population encompassing Saudi youth who frequent cafés in Riyadh. An electronic questionnaire was utilized as the study tool, considering distribution of cafés across different neighborhoods of Riyadh and their operation at various times. A barcode was affixed to facilitate respondents. Convenience sampling was utilized due to the lack of statistics on number of youths who frequent cafés in Riyadh, with a sample size of 380 male and female youth.
Results: Study results revealed diversity within the sample between males and females. Half of the sample spend around two hours in the café, preferring international beverages, particularly coffee. They visit cafés to meet friends, pass leisure time, and accomplish tasks. Study found no statistically significant correlation between café attendance and dimensions of behavioral and religious values. However, it observe a significant negative correlation between café attendance and dimensions of cultural identity and national belonging.
Conclusion: The increase in the number of cafés, and their relationship with cultural identity and national belonging, constitute a reason for interest in further studying. Conducting sociological studies focusing on their spread and attendance among youth is warranted. Leveraging the role cafés play in enhancing cultural activities associated with youth values should be explored.
